How it is thought to work
EGF binds receptors on skin cells and stimulates them to divide and migrate, which speeds repair of the outer skin layer.
What the evidence shows
Small studies of serums reported improvement in skin texture. Medical EGF products are used for wound healing in some countries.
Safety and unknowns
Generally well tolerated topically. Because EGF promotes cell growth, use on suspicious skin lesions is not advised.
