How it is thought to work
Etelcalcetide activates the calcium-sensing receptor on the parathyroid gland, lowering parathyroid hormone release.
What the evidence shows
Phase 3 trials showed larger reductions in parathyroid hormone than placebo, and it was non-inferior to oral cinacalcet.
Safety and unknowns
Low calcium is the main risk and may cause cramps or, rarely, heart rhythm problems.
Regulatory status
FDA-approved as Parsabiv in 2017.
