Teduglutide
A GLP-2 analog that helps the gut absorb nutrients in short bowel syndrome.
Effects studied or claimed
What it is used or promoted for, and where each effect has actually been seen
- Reduce parenteral nutrition dependence in short bowel syndromeFDA approved
How it is thought to work
Teduglutide mimics GLP-2, which promotes growth of the lining of the small intestine and improves absorption of fluid and nutrients.
What the evidence shows
Pivotal trials in adults with short bowel syndrome showed that more patients could reduce intravenous nutrition volume compared with placebo.
Safety and unknowns
Because it promotes tissue growth, polyps in the bowel must be monitored. Abdominal pain, swelling and fluid retention are common.
Regulatory status
FDA-approved as Gattex in 2012 for adults, with later approval in children.
Regulatory status changes quickly. This entry was last reviewed on 27 October 2026. Confirm current status with the FDA before relying on it.
