Mazdutide
A dual GLP-1 and glucagon receptor agonist developed by Innovent, approved in China for obesity.
Effects studied or claimed
What it is used or promoted for, and where each effect has actually been seen
- Weight loss in obesityLarge trials
- Blood sugar control in type 2 diabetesLarge trials
How it is thought to work
Mazdutide activates the GLP-1 receptor to curb appetite and the glucagon receptor to raise energy expenditure and reduce liver fat.
What the evidence shows
Phase 3 trials in Chinese adults showed substantial weight loss and good blood sugar control. Most data come from Chinese populations, and head-to-head comparison with semaglutide has been reported by the sponsor.
Safety and unknowns
Gastrointestinal effects were the most common. Data outside East Asia are limited.
Regulatory status
Approved by China's regulator in 2025. It is not approved by the FDA.
Regulatory status changes quickly. This entry was last reviewed on 27 October 2026. Confirm current status with the FDA before relying on it.
